Girls Night Out Showcase was a huge success Whitt Jones and his Girls Night Out Committee raised over $13K for the Kay Yow Foundation. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. Girls Night Out was a series of great basketball games and fun festivities for the whole family. I had a chance to see several nationally ranked teams as well as several nationally ranked players. Although the event had several talented players this is the group of you ladies that made the Girls Night Out All Tournament teams. FAYETTEVILLE, GA - Day 1 of Girls Night Out finished with a bang, pitting Potter's House Christian Academy, featuring a pair of North Carolina signees 5-9 Antoinette Bannister and 6-2 Hillary Fuller vs IMG Academy-Pendleton School with Central Florida signee 5-6 Briahanna Jackson and 2012 unsigned 5-7 Hayley Alexander. The fast paced game saw several lead changes with both teams handicapped with their star players Bannister and Jackson saddled in foul trouble forcing Fuller and Alexander to step up for their perspective teams. PHCA's Fuller had a huge night with 21 points and 20 rebounds and IMG Alexander drained 6 3pters had 22 points. Bannister and Jackson both finished with 23 points for their teams. PHCA also had two other players in double figures Aisha Brock 14 and Monique Hall with 11. IMG Academy Charleston Southern signee Alyssa Mann had 10 pts 5 rebounds 5 assist. PHCA won the duel 77-69 over IMG Academy.

Reigning Miss Basketball & Gatorade Player of the Year, Hayden Hamby (Class of 2012) a 5'7" Guard for 3A-West Morgan High School became only the 4th high school girls' player in the history of the state of Alabama to surpass the 4,000 point total!  Hayden exceeded the mark as she scored 44 points in a tough 66-56 Area Game loss to #3 ranked 3A-Clements High School.  Hayden now has 4,014 points in her varsity career which began as an 8th grader at West Morgan.  Upon completion of her Senior season, she will take her talents on to Top 20 ranked Purdue University and Head Coach Sharon Versyp. This a story about two very good friends. Keonna Farmer and Gabrielle Holston. Gabby and I have played summer basketball together since 2001 at the North East YMCA. This past summer we reached our 10 year anniversary. In the summer of 2009 it looked like we were going our separate ways, but fate had it's way. My team practice was canceled and I decided to go see Gabby practice. She was playing with the Alabama Roadrunner's. The practice was so intense I wanted to join the team that day and I did. So it happened we were together again. This was the summer before our freshman year of high school. I went to Ramsay High as a freshman to play with number five player on the ESPN HoopGurlz 2010 list Kaneisha Horn. I was so in awe of her. This year's squad is a balanced team with experienced seniors; point guard Chanice Lee,  shooting guard Carrie Alexander(Drexel), 6-3 Center Dionna Joynes(Boston) and Jasmine Boyd.  They were able to get quality minutes from their bench with solid contributions from sophomore Serena Brown and junior Briana DuBose, who both have the ability to score from mid-range and the perimeter. In any other conference this team may be favored to win a  championship - but in the WCAC - McNarmara was six regular season games against three nationally ranked teams, St. John's College, Our Lady of Counsel and The Academy of the Holy Cross. However don't be surprised if McNamara pulls off an upset or two and creates some havoc in national rankings. There was no better way to kick off the 2011-2012 girls basketball season in the DMV(DC, MD, VA) region than with a 2-day tournament featuring the best teams from the WCAC(Washington Catholic Athletic Conference) and the IAAM(Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland). The WCAC is considered to be one of the top high school conferences in the country and the IAAM includes 30 parochial and independent schools from the Baltimore region. Game 1: St Mary's Ryken(Leonardtown, MD) lead by senior guard Katie McCormick(Georgetown) had a decisive victory over Severn(Severn, MD) 80-47. Game 2: A young St. Frances(Baltimore, MD) team had their hands full with a gritty Bishop McNamara(Forestville, MD) squad. McNamara jumped out to an early lead, senior point guard Chanise Lee did a great job anchoring their full court pressure defense and transition offense. SFA was plagued with early foul trouble, that keep many of their starters on the bench in the first half. Congrats to Hoover's and Baylor signee 6-1 Chardonae Fuqua for reaching the 1000 point milestone with her first basket against in state rival and defending state champion Bob Jones last night. Hoover won the rematch from last season's state championship title game 53-26.
